Or maybe, they did not them selves have the stamina to read another manual and learn Inkscape. If someone tries to convince you, that you can only use Adobe or Corel, they are probably selling it. Personally, I mostly use Inkscape, Photoshop more then GIMP and Corel Draw virtually never. Inkscape has powerful tools, multicolor tracing, filters and extensions, and you should be able to make "any" design with it. This is however a limitation, that can be overcome. Inkscape lacks like GIMP a little (now compared to Adobe Illustartor) concerning color management. Separations and halftoning works more smooth in Photoshop.

GIMP has some very powerful free plugins. GIMP has some limitations compared to Photoshop, in particular working in CMYK and adjustment layers are missing functionalities. I take the PNG file I made previously and open it in GIMP. While I do both photography and vector illustrations I find that I prefer to spend most of my time creating illustrations vice taking pictures. I hope this helps anyone trying to get into use Inkscape and Gimp for creating vector illustrations for DT submission. There may be other ways to achieve the same results but this is what works for me. I have been working with Inkscape and Gimp on Linux and MacOS X for several years now and have developed a basic work flow that works well for me and creates images suitable for submission to DT.
